Meet GOODONYA Founder Kris Buchanan

Kris Buchanan is a former Olympian and restaurant owner. Based in Encinitas, California, her brand is nature inspired, organic, and 100% non-GMO. Additionally, GOODONYA sells organic products that can be enjoyed anywhere and follow the mission that “real food & the way we feel have a direct connection, and that life is too short not to feel GOOD.” Be sure to enter in our Instagram giveaway to try and win their product HYDRATE, a certified organic (and delicious!) electrolyte powder.

What led to starting GOODONYA?

As an elite athlete, Kris Buchanan was consuming plenty of processed foods, extreme amounts of sugar (from sports drinks specifically), and fast food. Thus, in 2007, she found herself severely hypoglycemic and dealing with Celiac and Hashimoto’s disease. This wake-up call led her to go back to school for Holistic Nutrition and revamp her restaurant GOODONYA to promote real, natural ingredients.
Since we’re big fans of GOODONYA and Kris’ mission over here at Trash Panda, we were excited to interview Kris about some of the ingredients she avoids or seeks out, and learn a bit more about proper hydration. We hope you get as much out of her insights as we have!

What are 3 ingredients you avoid at all costs?

Kris: “Soy, canola oil, gluten, flavors. (I can’t choose just 3!)”

What are some of your favorite #trashpandaapproved products you use frequently?

Kris: “Right now I am all about anything that is biodynamic/regenerative.”
Biodynamics is a “a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food, and nutrition”. Biodynamic farmers work to nurture and harmonize each valuable component of the farm or garden to support the health and vitality of the whole. Read more here.

What is one simple step anyone can take to improve their health?

Kris: “Drink better water!”
“75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Drinking water is one of the best and most simplistic ways we can boost our health. When we are properly hydrated, our bodies function optimally and we feel better.”
“Some people struggle to drink enough water, and most of us are drinking the wrong water. Brands that are "natural" or even brands that are Non GMO Verified still contain chemical pesticides. Tap, filtered, reverse osmosis, and purified water all have the natural minerals stripped out, so you could be drinking more water and actually end up depleting the much needed minerals in your body if you’re not replenishing them. Hydration affects almost every system in our body - from cardiovascular, joints, skin, our moods and energy, brain clarity, and sleep patterns, so it’s important to be hydrating properly.”

What is HYDRATE, and how is it different from other products on the market?

Kris: “HYDRATE is one of the only electrolyte powders that is certified organic. So, to compare us to the others that aren’t is comparing apples to oranges… so I don’t even go there. And even the certified organic ones out there still use flavorings - which are made in a lab.
But the 3 main differences are:
1.We use real food based minerals, as opposed to stripped down, processed minerals. Think sea salt vs table salt. Table salt has 2 minerals and is toxic, Himalayan Pink Salt (that we use) has 80 minerals in the ratio that nature created. And it’s the same with potassium and magnesium. So other drinks may have “more” electrolytes on their label than us, but it’s more of a processed food. And I’d even argue, do they have more? Since ours is in the natural state, it’s more bioavailable. The ratio that nature created with minerals is what belongs in our body.
2.HYDRATE contains 1g sugar vs 11g in the top powder and 30-50g in a sports drink. Even so called “organic” Gatorade has 30g. I suffered the negative consequences of sugary sports drinks after drinking them for 20+ years, from little league to the Olympics - all that sugar really did a number on me.
3.Our taste. We use real, organic, dried lemon juice vs natural lemon flavoring. This is KEY for taste. We taste like real lemonade because we use… real lemons. Artificial, so-called “Natural” and even the new “Organic Flavorings” are all made in a lab. They are created to excite our taste buds and they overstimulate them - to me they taste fake.. because they are ;)”
We’d like to give a huge thanks to Kris Buchanan and GOODONYA for taking the time to answer our questions! Be sure to head over to our instagram to enter in our HYDRATE giveaway and get some for yourself!
